Did you know that Britain is the world’s largest producer and consumer of cider? That’s right! Last year, we guzzled down a staggering 840 million litres of the stuff! That’s enough to fill hundreds of Olympic swimming pools—and then some! This national passion for the crisp, boozy beverage means that, no matter where you are in the UK, you’re never far from a cider festival. These celebrations bring together cider aficionados, local brewers, and food lovers alike, making them a brilliant day out. Last weekend, the Hog Roast Biggar crew had the pleasure of catering at one such festival, held at a charming, family-owned orchard—a setting as traditional as it gets for a cider celebration!
Our team was thrilled to be invited to cater this event, especially knowing that hog roasts and cider make a deliciously classic pairing. Arriving early to ensure everything was ready for the kickoff, our crew set up in the heart of the orchard. With the open air and the scent of apples all around, Hog Roast Biggar’s spit-roasting specialists got to work preparing a full hog roast. As always, we used real flames for that extra flavour, allowing the heat to seal in the juices and create the perfect, golden-brown crackling. Watching the pig roast over the open flame is always a spectacle, and it wasn’t long before the drool-inducing aroma filled the orchard.
As guests began to arrive, the air was abuzz with excitement. From dry, tangy brews to sweet, fruity blends, cider enthusiasts had an incredible variety of flavours to sample. Our hog roast sandwiches were the ideal complement to the cider—a hearty, flavourful bite to balance the fruity sips. Each sandwich was crafted with a choice of gluten-free or wholemeal buns, piled high with succulent pulled pork, crispy crackling, and our signature sage and onion stuffing, all topped off with a slather of applesauce. These flavours were a huge hit, harmonising perfectly with the variety of ciders on offer.
Adding to the festive vibe, a lively band kept everyone’s spirits high as they danced, sang along, and savoured each sip and bite. There’s something truly special about enjoying traditional British fare amidst apple trees, friends, and great music.
For us at Hog Roast Biggar, the festival was a wonderful opportunity to bring people together and celebrate one of the country’s most beloved beverages. We can’t wait for next time!
